4 Signs a Relationship Is Pulling You Away From God

Not every connection is meant to stay — especially if it’s costing you your closeness with God.

Relationships are powerful. They shape your thoughts, influence your decisions, and impact your spiritual direction more than you realize. The right relationships can strengthen your faith — but the wrong ones can slowly pull you away from God without it being obvious at first. Scripture reminds us, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character’” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

God doesn’t call you to isolate yourself from people, but He does call you to be wise about what you allow to influence your heart.

Here are four signs a relationship may be pulling you away from God.

1. 🧠 Your Convictions Start to Weaken

When a relationship pulls you away from God, what once felt clearly right or wrong begins to feel negotiable. You may find yourself justifying things you used to stand firm on. Scripture says, “Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block” (1 Corinthians 8:9). When your convictions weaken to maintain a relationship, it’s a sign your spiritual foundation is being compromised.

2. 🙏 Your Time With God Becomes Inconsistent

A relationship that pulls you away from God often crowds out your time with Him. Your priorities shift, and what used to be consistent becomes occasional. Scripture reminds us, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). If your closeness with God is decreasing while the relationship is increasing, it’s worth paying attention.

3. 🕊️ You Feel Spiritually Drained Instead of Strengthened

Healthy relationships encourage your faith, not drain it. When a relationship consistently leaves you feeling spiritually exhausted, disconnected, or unsettled, it may not be building you up. Scripture says, “Encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). If you’re being pulled down instead of lifted up, that’s a warning sign.

4. 🤍 You’re Prioritizing the Relationship Over Obedience to God

When a relationship begins to take God’s place in your life, it becomes spiritually dangerous. You may feel torn between what God is leading you to do and what the relationship requires. Scripture reminds us, “We must obey God rather than human beings” (Acts 5:29). No relationship should lead you to compromise your obedience to God.

📜 Scriptures to Meditate On

  • 1 Corinthians 15:33“Bad company corrupts good character.”

  • James 4:8“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:11“Encourage one another and build each other up.”

  • Acts 5:29“We must obey God rather than human beings.”

  • Proverbs 13:20“Walk with the wise and become wise.”

💬 Final Thoughts

Not every relationship is meant to stay in your life — and that’s okay. God cares more about your soul than your comfort. The right relationships will draw you closer to Him, not pull you away. If something is costing you your peace, your convictions, or your connection with God, it’s worth reevaluating. Protect your relationship with God first — everything else flows from that.

🙏 Prayer

God, give me wisdom to recognize relationships that are pulling me away from You. Help me have the courage to set boundaries where needed and the discernment to prioritize my relationship with You above everything else. Surround me with people who strengthen my faith and draw me closer to You. Amen.

With love,
