Finding Freedom Through Forgiveness
How to Let Go When It Still Hurts
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)
💔 When Forgiveness Feels Impossible
There are wounds that cut deeper than words can express. Betrayal. Abuse. Rejection. Abandonment. In moments like these, forgiveness doesn't feel like healing—it feels like letting someone off the hook. But Scripture doesn’t offer forgiveness as a suggestion—it offers it as the very path to freedom.
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” – Colossians 3:13
God isn't asking us to feel like forgiving. He’s inviting us to release what’s poisoning our hearts so that healing can begin. Forgiveness is not forgetting. It’s choosing not to live shackled to the pain anymore.
🛑 Forgiveness Is Not Approval
Let’s be clear—forgiving someone does not mean what they did was okay. Jesus never minimized sin. When He forgave, He also called people to repentance and truth. Forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation, and it’s not blind denial.
“Do not take revenge… but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.” – Romans 12:19
When we forgive, we place the offender into God’s hands. Not ours. Forgiveness takes the burden of justice off your shoulders and places it into the hands of a holy, just, and faithful God.
🌿 Forgiveness Sets You Free
Harboring unforgiveness feels like control—but it’s a trap. Unforgiveness doesn't trap the offender—it traps you.
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’” – Matthew 18:21–22
Jesus knew forgiveness is something we would wrestle with over and over. But He also knew the cost of carrying bitterness was too high. Forgiveness opens the door to emotional and spiritual freedom.
🕊️ Forgiving Like Jesus
When Jesus hung on the cross, bloody, beaten, and betrayed, His response wasn’t revenge—it was mercy: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” – Luke 23:34
This is the Savior we follow. He forgave in the middle of His pain—not after the pain was over.
He calls us to do the same—not because it’s easy, but because it’s powerful. Because it’s what changes us.
Forgiving like Jesus means trusting the Father with your pain. It means leaning on His Spirit to do what your flesh cannot. And He will give you grace to do it—even if it’s one small choice at a time.
🧎 How Do I Begin?
Forgiveness is not a one-time decision. It’s a process. Start by telling God the truth. Tell Him how it hurt. Tell Him what it cost you. Then ask for His strength to release it to Him.
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” – Psalm 51:10
You may not feel like you’re ready to forgive—but that’s why forgiveness is not a feeling. It’s an act of faith.
Ask Him for the strength to want to forgive. That’s a powerful prayer. He can work with that. He’s not rushing you. He’s walking with you.
🙌 The Freedom of Forgiveness
When we forgive, we look most like Jesus. And when we forgive, we make space for healing to begin—not just for the other person, but for ourselves.
“If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” – Matthew 6:14
Forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting. It doesn’t mean pretending. It means choosing freedom over bitterness. Trusting God’s justice. And moving forward without chains.
🙏 Prayer:
Father, You know the pain that has pierced my heart. You see the wounds I carry, and You know how hard it is for me to let go. But today, I ask for Your strength to begin. Help me forgive—not because they deserve it, but because You’ve forgiven me. I release the burden of bitterness and entrust it to You. Fill my heart with peace, and show me how to walk forward in freedom. Teach me to forgive like You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
