Be Still and Let God Work

Learning to Be Rooted in a Restless World

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
— Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

🌍 When Life Won’t Slow Down

We are a generation wired for motion.
From the moment we wake up, the world tells us to move — to be faster, louder, more productive, more connected, more everything.

Even in our faith journeys, we sometimes equate spiritual maturity with action: reading more, serving more, doing more. But in all the doing, striving, and reaching, our souls grow weary. We can find ourselves spiritually drained and emotionally dry.

God’s invitation to us is not always “Go”—sometimes, it’s simply “Be.”

Be still.
Be quiet.
Be present.
Be with Me.

Stillness in a world of movement is not passivity. It’s powerful surrender. It’s how we go deeper rather than wider.

🌾 1. The Invitation to Cease Striving

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
— Psalm 46:10

In the original Hebrew, “be still” translates to “let go” or “cease striving.” God isn’t calling us to do nothing. He’s calling us to stop doing what we were never meant to carry alone.

We are not God. We can’t control everything. We can’t fix every problem or plan every outcome. But in stillness, we acknowledge who is God — and that acknowledgment is where peace begins.

Stillness re-centers us. It recalibrates our hearts to truth and repositions our eyes on heaven.

🧠 2. Stillness is a Weapon Against Anxiety

An anxious mind can be noisy. Fear loops through our thoughts like a broken record. The world around us constantly feeds our fears: war, uncertainty, finances, the future. Stillness doesn’t ignore the chaos — it steps into it with trust.

Jesus modeled this when the storm raged and the disciples panicked. While the winds howled and the waves crashed, Jesus slept.

Why?

Because He knew the power and presence of His Father. His stillness was not ignorance — it was trust.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.”
— Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)

Stillness trains our minds to let God carry what we can’t.

🌱 3. Deep Roots Grow in Quiet Soil

In nature, the healthiest plants don’t grow the fastest — they grow the deepest. That depth is only possible in quiet, undisturbed soil.

Your spiritual growth doesn’t come from constantly chasing new things. It comes from learning to remain. To sit with God long enough to be transformed by His presence.

Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray. Not because He was lazy or unmotivated — but because He understood the power of presence over pressure.

“Very early in the morning… Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.”
— Mark 1:35 (NIV)

In stillness, we stop trying to be impressive and instead learn to be intimate.

✨ 4. God Does His Deepest Work in Quiet Places

Some of the most transformative moments in Scripture happened when people were still:

  • Moses stood still before the Red Sea and watched God split it.

  • Elijah heard God not in fire or earthquake, but in a gentle whisper.

  • Mary sat at Jesus’ feet while others rushed around, and He said she chose the better thing.

  • Jesus often left the crowds to be alone with the Father — not to withdraw from His mission, but to be refilled for it.

Stillness isn’t retreating from purpose — it’s preparing for it.

If you’re in a still season right now, don’t despise it. Don’t rush through it. This might be the place where God is building your foundation.

“In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…”
— Isaiah 30:15 (NIV)

🙏 A Prayer for Strength in Stillness

Lord, I confess that I often equate movement with meaning.
I’ve been striving, stretching, and stressing to stay ahead, when You are calling me to be still.
Teach me to trust You in the pause.
Quiet the noise in my mind and help me to hear Your voice clearly.
Help me not to resist the slow moments but embrace them as invitations to deeper intimacy.
I surrender my anxious pace and choose to rest in Your presence.
Be my strength in stillness, my peace in silence, and my anchor when the world feels shaky.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
